Corporate Social Responsibility
We have participated in a series of activities in China to achieve our commitment to society. For example:
- In late December 2011, RBS staff in China again donated 542 gifts boxes to the students in three schools in Beijing and Sichuan and one children’s hospital in Shanghai.
- In September, 2011, our volunteers in Beijing and Shanghai respectively carried out interactive activities with kids in Hongkou District Welfare House, Shanghai and students in BN Vocational School in Beijing for giving 150 students of BN Vocational School a lecture on basic financial management skills.
- In January, 2011, RBS staff in China donated 633 gifts boxes to the students in four schools of Beijing, Shanghai and Sichuan.
- In December, 2010, we donated RMB 291,200 to 2010 BNVS Charity Gala organized by China Youth Development Foundation and WRSA Chamber of Commerce of China. This donation is used by the schools in the grant program of Hope Project for vocational education to offer free vocational education to children of migrant workers.
- In July, 2010, by working with the MercyCorps, our bank funded a painting exhibition for students with Dandelion School of Beijing and the printing of training materials for several vocational schools of migrant workers in Beijing and Shanghai.
- On the 38th World Environment Protection day in June, 2010, RBS staff in China raised RMB 20,000 from their employees by auctioning personal belongings and sent this fund to China Environmental Protection Foundation for environmental protection and improvement.
- In April 2010, the Bank and its employees donated 0.5 million RMB to Angel Sunshine Fund to help cure Children with congenital heart disease in earthquake-hit area Yushu, Qinghai Province. On 9th December, 2011, Beijing staff representatives visited part of the children who came to Beijing to receive heart surgery using our donated fund.
- In 2008, RBS staff in China and around the world donated generously to people affected Sichuan earthquake. A total of 8.3 million RMB in donation was used to re-construct two schools in Qingchuan County, Sichuan Province. Staff representatives participated in the schools’ Opening Ceremonies and brought with them study materials for teachers and students. On 7th May, 2010, 17 employee representatives from China Corporate Coverage team visited the two schools again and brought with them 400 books to the newly established school libraries. In August, 2010, we invited ten excellent students and two teachers from one of the schools to visit Beijing and Shanghai and attend our rebranding client events.
- In 2008, The Royal Bank of Scotland donated nearly 1 million RMB to establish “Chengdu Young Women Migrant Workers Venture Project”. The project aims at helping females at the age of 18 - 35 to participate in training courses and activities to obtain economic and working skills and improve their business capacity and competitiveness. In addition, the project offers an access to seed capital for these females to improve their living standards and enhance the sense of belonging in the city life. Until March, 2010, 1966 participants had taken part in work skill training courses funded by RBS.
- RBS Beijing Branch has identified environmental protection as one of its key social responsibilities. Started from 2007, the employees there organized annual activities to plant a total of 400 trees in suburban Beijing to beautify the environment and clean up the air.
- In 2007 RBS Shanghai-based staff, in conjunction with Save the Children, spent a weekend transforming the nursery and playground of Lan Tian (Blue Sky) School in Qing Pu, Shanghai. The school caters for children of poor migrants who have come to the city to look for work. This was the first project outside the UK to receive additional funding from Super Grounds, a RBS-funded Community programme. On May 30, 2008, our staff visited the school again. They brought school children special gifts for Children’s Day, including 20 personal computers, sporting goods and books.
- In 2007, The Royal Bank of Scotland funded the School to Work program in Dandelion School, the first middle school in Beijing exclusively for children of migrant workers, donating 0.24 million Euros through Mercy Crops. Up to December, 2009, 239 teenagers have benefited from the School to Work program. 133 of these students continued to study in the vocational high school and 106 have accepted preliminary training. 86 took up an internship in partner employers and 32 students have signed employment contracts with companies.
